Thoughts for the Coming Generation
So today is Children’s Day. This is a special day celebrated all over the world to recognize children and their existence. The joy of every home is the presence of these special creatures and every moment where a child is born is always one to be celebrated. In fact, about 80% of marriages all over the world are contracted with plans for procreation, which remains a major reason among others for marriages today. The Bible also expressly states in Psalm 127 verse 3 that ‘Children are the heritage of the Lord and the fruit of the womb is his reward’. It goes further to say in the next verse that ‘as arrows are in a man’s quiver so are the children born in a man’s youth’. Don’t fret, people. I am not about to take you into a church service. However, we cannot over emphasize the importance of children who are indeed the hope for the continuity of mankind and as we like to say around here, they are the ‘leaders of tomorrow’ or ‘the coming generation’.

The Twin Goals of Safety and Security.
In the words of Jodi Rell, ‘at the end of the day, the goals are simple; safety and security’. This is as true as it comes! Safety is defined as ‘the condition of being protected from or unlikely to cause danger’ while Security is defined as ‘the state of being free from danger or threat’. Both terms are synonymous and emphasize the existence of an apparatus that ensures one has no need to worry about danger or threat. The absence of safety and security in any society renders such a society a lifeless one and effectively takes away its ability to reach its full potentials.

“Hey there, can I have a quarter?”
This line is quite familiar with Americans who find themselves having to use the slot machine in a café, supermarket, office, bank reception etc. A quarter basically is a 25-cent coin that could come in handy for very basic and meagre expenses – a chocolate bar, a Coke can etc. A quarter is of course worth way more than a penny which is just once cent. Over the years like in every other economy in the world, the value of the ‘quarter’ has also greatly reduced, and it can hardly buy you anything of serious value. The Downward Spiral and the Glimpse of hope.
So early last week, we had the official confirmation that Nigeria had sunk into recession yet again, the second one in five years. This was courtesy of the nation’s GDP contracting by 3.6 percent in Q3 2020 after shrinking by 6.1 percent in the previous quarter. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF)’s forecast, the Nigerian economy will contract by 4.3 per cent this year, which would be the largest contraction in nearly 40 years. What a year it has been!

The idea of politics fascinates me to no end. While I wouldn’t necessarily call myself partisan, I am honest enough to say I do a lot of watching on the side lines. I am not a registered member of any political party in Nigeria, but I have always tried to be a good citizen and cast my votes a couple of times since the first time I voted in 2007. I had missed the 2003 elections by whiskers as I was yet to hit the voter eligibility age of 18 at the time. Elections, both in Nigeria and outside Nigeria have continued to thrill me even till date. For instance, I can hardly wait for the U.S.A Presidential Elections in November.
