1. Why are DPCO’s necessary to Nigerian Firms?

A 2012 study of by the National Cyber Security Alliance found that 60% of small businesses fold within 6 months of a data breach. It is undeniable that Nigerian firms are making radical advancements and putting themselves on the global map in their respective industries, but this could be the downfall should they fail to implement the right security protocols for their data management systems and procedures.

A Data Protection Compliant Organization (DPCO) possesses the requisite legal and technical know-how to shore up an organization’s data gathering and handling process thus ensuring that the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of her data is never compromised.

2. The Importance of DPCO’s to Data Controllers and Data Administrators?

DPCOs represent the National Information Technology Development Authority (NITDA) with respect to monitoring, auditing, and training data controllers on data protection compliance (NDPR 3.1.4.). Data Controllers and Administrators can also avail the experience of DPCOs in improving or innovating their data management practices.
