The Economy of the North-West: Kebbi State.

In Nigeria, when you hear ‘the North’, the first thing you think of are the Hausas. The Former Military Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida created a state out of the “old Sokoto” known as “Kebbi state” in the North-West geopolitical region, that was and is predominantly agricultural. Kebbi State is divided into four emirate councils (Gawande, Argungu, Yauri and Zuru) and twenty-one local government areas.

It might be argued that insecurity and other challenging factors led to Kebbi having the lowest IGR (N4.9 billion) in the North-West and second lowest in the country in 2018.

Kebbi State, nicknamed “Land of Equity” was created in 1991 and has Birnin Kebbi as its State Capital. The State was carved out of Sokoto State. Kebbi State covers approximately an area of 36,985 square kilometres. It is estimated that the population is about 4.7 million.
